Incase you missed it, Chillhouse officially relaunched our Chill Blends – adaptogenic blends tailored to help with a variety of commonplace issues, from getting a boost of energy to chilling the f*ck out. To help you get acquainted with the products, we’ll be teaching you about the different key ingredients found in our blends and their primary benefits. This week, we’ll be talking about Make Me Glow, an antioxidant packed blend formulated with acai and goji to name a few. Though acai bowls are largely popular, adding goji berries to different meals is beginning to see a resurgence. Why exactly is goji so popular? We got you covered.

What is Goji?

Much like many of the other ingredients we discuss, goji is an ancient ingredient used for thousands of years in eastern medicine. Whether it was cultivated for diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, or even age related eye problems, goji has been consumed in a variety of forms such as raw, cooked, dried, powdered, or even in juices and wines. Though we do not claim that Make Me Glow will help with any real medical ailments, it is an easy to use powder that, when added to milk or water, creates a delicious latte bound to help your skin radiate.

What are the Oral Benefits?

As mentioned above, goji berries have been used throughout time for a variety of reasons – and with good reason! From being dense in nutrients to help your skin glow, it’s no wonder people have been adding this into their routines for not just a few years, but thousands. Keep reading for goji’s top benefits when ingested orally.

Goji and Nutrients

Not surprisingly, goji berries are incredibly dense in nutrients. One ¼ serving gives 150% of your daily Vitamin A, 27% of your daily Vitamin C, 42% of daily iron, 21% of your daily potassium, and contains 12 grams of protein. In addition, it’s also high in copper, selenium, and zinc, all of which are essential to the healthy function of your organs. To put it in perspective, one serving of goji berries is more nutritious than apples, oranges, blueberries, and raspberries.

Goji and Immunity

By now, it should be no surprise that here at TCT, we love ourselves a natural immunity booster. Add to our ever growing list, goji! Studies have found that consistent goji consumption boosts lymphocytes, which is the scientific name for the white blood cells that are responsible for protecting the body from viruses and other harmful bacteria. Taking a handful of goji berries definitely won’t stop a cold in its tracks, but incorporate it into your routine (perhaps through an easy to use powder?!), and you might find yourself getting ill less often.

Goji and Anti-Aging

Oh yes, you read that right. Goji berries are hailed for their anti-aging and beautifying properties, which is exactly why we use it in our beautifying powder. To put it simply – goji is extremely high in antioxidants, and antioxidants are key when it comes to fighting aging. Why? Antioxidants help to repair free radical damage in the body. Free radical damage can wreak havoc on your aging process simply because free radicals can bind to your collagen and elastin and break it down over time. When your collagen and elastin break down, your skin becomes less bouncy and plump.

Can I Use It Topically?

Though it might be hard to find actual products that incorporate goji, it is incredibly beneficial in terms of anti-aging concerns even when applied topically. In fact, it’s the same antioxidant properties that benefit you orally that also benefit you topically. Applying any form of antioxidant to the skin reduces free radical damage, which in turn allows the collagen and elastin to maintain their strength. In addition, it can kickstart collagen production on the skin, thus helping make the skin more bouncy and plump. Sounds like a winner, right?

Are There Any Side Effects?

Though numerous studies have demonstrated that goji berries can be incredibly helpful for a variety of reasons, more human studies still need to be done. No negative side effects have been reported, but we always recommend taking in small doses to be safe.
