What is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s Mane is a mushroom, and like many of the ingredients we discuss in Wellness One-oh-Ones, has been used in Eastern medicine for over 500 years for overall longevity. Also known as bearded tooth fungus or the hedgehog mushroom, this little guy resembles a perfect ball of white, fluffy material. Though it is native to North America, it is just now being introduced to the west for all of its amazing functions. What exactly are they? Let us assist.

What are the Oral Benefits?

Like we mentioned above, Lion’s Mane has been used for centuries for overall longevity, but it also helps with cognitive functions, gut health, and even insulin levels. Get to know some of its most popular benefits below.

Lion’s Mane and Cognitive Function

Lion’s Mane is added to the Spin My Wheels blend specifically for this reason. Rather than turning to your midday latte, give Lion’s Mane a spin as it has been proven to improve memory, focus, and overall concentration. Lion’s Mane helps to stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factors, a neuropeptide that aids your brain in processing and transmitting information.

Similar to maca, Lion’s Mane is known for providing a clean boost of energy without the jitters or the crash. By reducing lactic acid levels in the blood, Lion’s Mane in turn reduces overall fatigue. It’s also is chock full of antioxidants, and the more antioxidants your body has, the easier it is for energy to pass between cells. Of course, antioxidants are not just good for energy, they’re great for anti-aging. If you’ve been reading Wellness One-oh-Ones, we’ve definitely touched on this before. Antioxidants, whether applied topically or ingested orally, reduce free radical damage done to the cells. Free radicals damage your collagen and elastin, thus increasing the aging process. So by using antioxidants, you are effectively repairing any damage done to the skin in the aging process.

Lion’s Mane and Insulin

Insulin is not something to be trifled with, so of course consult a doctor if you are in fact diabetic. That being said, we felt it was worth mentioning that Lion’s Mane has been proven to reduce insulin sensitivity. Because of this, some people use it to aid in maintaining healthy insulin levels and as an attempt to reduce spikes and drops.

Lion’s Mane and Inflammation

Studies have shown that inflammation may be the cause of many commonplace diseases, and in turn, most of us have been attempting to increase our intake of anti-inflammatory foods. Turmeric is the most common, but Lion’s Mane is quite effective itself. In fact, numerous studies have shown that Lion’s Mane has been used to effectively manage both IBS and IBD.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Currently, there are no known serious side effects of using Lion’s Mane. The only one worth noting are a few reports of an increase in itchy skin, but this can be explained by the increase in the nerve growth factor levels, as it might make you more alert and aware to the sensation.
