Sometimes, no matter the skincare routine, acne just remains a persistent bother. Though it’s nothing to be ashamed of or hide, it can be hard to muster confidence when dealing with such persistent skin issues. Enter Skin Discipline, a skin health supplement by Zitsticka aimed at reducing the seemingly endless stream of new pimples. To learn all about it, we spoke to Daniel Kaplan and Robbie Miller, the co-founders of the brand itself. Read all about it and shop below!

What is the Purpose of SKIN DISCIPLINE?

“Persistent acne is almost always caused by internal imbalances or deficiencies, so we wanted to begin within. We worked with our board of dermatologists to develop SKIN DISCIPLINE: An inside-out approach to resolve the root cause of breakouts; something that addresses the long-game.”

“Topical treatments are of course helpful and complementary to the SD routine, but for anyone with recurrent mild-to-moderate breakouts, SD is an acne-specific, all-in-one formulation that dials down inflammation, enhances gut health, balances sebum (oil) levels, among other things.”

“There are many generalist supplements out there; multivitamins or singular nutrient strains, but wanted to add something to the space that truly didn’t exist. SD brings together a comprehensive range of skin supportive micronutrients, each with clinical evidence stacked beside it. Our nested cap-in-cap technology allows for these breakout-specific ingredients (that would typically live separately) to appear in one single dose. A daily capsule built for disobedient skin.”

What Should Users Expect, and in What Time Period?

According to Daniel and Robbie, “SKIN DISCIPLINE is clinically proven to reduce common acne within 12 weeks. Full acclimation occurs after 12 weeks of sustained use, at which time users will observe the product has alleviated surface inflammation, regulated sebum to unclog pores, curbed breakout-causing toxins, optimized gut-skin axis, strengthened skin cell walls, and accelerated cell turnover revealing fresher skin.” [As a frequent user myself, I can attest that my acne overall looks less inflamed and angry, for lack of a better term.]

Why are Probiotics so Important to Skin Health?

“Probiotics are the ‘good’ bacteria that ensure our gut microbiome stay happy, healthy and balanced. Clear skin and the state of our gut microbiome are closely linked; their relationship is sometimes referred to as the gut-skin axis. Intestinal dysbiosis— a state of microbial imbalance—has the potential to negatively impact skin function.”

“But not all probiotics are created equal. SKIN DISCIPLINE is formulated with 5 unique strains of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium, probiotics that have proven to positively impact the “gut-brain-skin axis” due to their anti-inflammatory properties. These strains have been aligned with improving acne from a systemic level. The complete list of strains is as follows: Lactobacillus Acidophilus La-14, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus Plantarum Lp- 115, Lactobacillus Casei LC-11, Bifidobacterium bifidum Bb-06 (equivalent to 10 billion colony-forming units).”

What Ingredients Work to Fight Acne?

“Zinc helps by regulating sebum (or oil) activity, reduces breakout severity and fortifies skin cells to dilute post-zit damage. Zinc also reduces the production of DHT, which can clog pores and increase zit-causing inflammation.”

“Triple distilled for purity and a neutral taste, our omega-3 is rich in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), essential fatty acids that soothe your body’s inflammatory response to excess sebum and toxins. This sustainably sourced fish oil addresses the root of your breakouts by helping to regulate acne-causing hormones.”

“Selenium assists your body’s production of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that dials down inflammation. It also maintains supportive antioxidants like vitamins A and E, which help minimize breakouts and upturn residual post-zit damage.”

“Chromium is a trace mineral improves the insulin response which is especially significant for skin health (as spikes in blood sugar levels can lead to the random breakout).”

“Niacin (AKA Vitamin B3) beholds distinctive anti-inflammatory benefits which are able to dial down the redness and inflammation zits tend to cause. Niacin can also help regulate sebaceous gland activity and in turn, balance oily complexions.”

What Ingredients Work to Strengthen the Skin?

“Pantothenic acid helps to engineer vital structural proteins such as collagen. It speeds up the multiplication of skill cells helping new skin layers to form. Vitamin B5 also helps to fortify stronger hair follicles… stronger follicles means tighter barriers which stops them from filling with excess oil.”
