Glass Hair: Cool Name, Even Cooler Look, Surprisingly Easy To Achieve

by Susie Benitez

It’s short, it’s shiny, and it’s oh-so-sleek. The perfect balance between effortless simplicity and all-out glam. Oh, and did we mention it’s absolutely trending right now? Those perfectly trimmed bobs you’re seeing all over Instagram have a name, and it’s called “glass hair.” Yup, sounds just as cool as it looks—and we’re all for it.

Refinery29 was the first to introduce us to the glass hair trend, which is, essentially, a sharp take on the tried-and-true bob haircut with a major shine upgrade. By styling the hair as smooth and glossy as possible, coupled with a crisp cut, the look is ultra-sleek and shiny—much like a piece of glass.

So while everyone else is holding onto their low maintenance beach hair as summer comes to a close, we talked to Laurie Heaps, celeb hairstylist to the likes of Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter, and got her tips on how to achieve the fiercest look of the season right at home. (Spoiler alert: it’s not as hard as it might look!)

How You Can Do It

When it comes to creating “glass hair,” Heaps tells us that we’re looking to create a brilliant “dry” shine, “it’s important for hair to shine yet not look greasy.” She recommends beginning with a good old-fashioned shampoo and condition that includes Amla oil, which can help by adding some extra shine early on in the process.

Next, towel dry hair and clip it into four sections—the nape, both sides, and the top of your head. Heaps says, “it’s important to use frizz-fighting heat protectant as you dry.” She recommends White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Thermal Spray. (Bonus: the spray will make your hair shinier as heat is applied and will lock in the style until shampooed out.)

After your hair is dried section by section, preferably with a boar bristle brush, go ahead and re-section it, this time coming in hot with a flat iron (ha, get it?). A ceramic iron like CHI’s 1″ Volcanic Lava Ceramic Hairstyling Iron produces ions that seal the cuticle, making it extra smooth and reflective. When you’re done, Heaps suggests finishing the look by “misting a paddle brush with BioSilk Silk Therapy Shine On Spray and brushing through.” Looking for even more shine? “Apply a dry oil with your palms and smooth over,” she continues.

And that’s it. Seriously! If you’re thinking of recreating this perfect-to-the-touch hairstyle, we’ve rounded up the products Heaps mentioned above, as well as some of our go-to picks, to help you create your own edgy glass hair look.

Leo Izquierdo, Co-founder of IGK Hair Care and renowned stylist suggested, “spray in sections on damp hair and blow dry in. The product is heat-activated and uses spirulina and keratin proteins and innovative bonding polymers to mimic the very shiny, smooth look of a keratin treatment.” Bonus tip?  Izquierdo stated “to maximize glassy results, spray again on dry hair (the product has 450F heat protection) and flat iron in. Do small sections for best results,”

CHI’s 1″ Volcanic Lava Ceramic Hairstyling Iron

What makes CHI irons so different are actually their lack of heat compared to other high-heat styling products. The volcanic lava combined with the CHI ceramic are so heat-conductive that they don’t require to a higher temperature to create a super-smooth finish.
