Women Owned Hair Accessories to Rock All Summer

by Sonali Karmarkar

Hair accessories are the new way to adorn yourself, the new jewelry if you will. Aside from being a huge trend for 2019, we are loving hair accessories for their magical power to transform three-day-old, lackluster tresses into a look. That’s right – hair accessories are better than dry shampoo with their ability to reverse a bad hair day and make it fashion.

We know no one has time to wash their hair daily (if you do, we applaud you), so hair accessories are essential to making it look like we have our lives together. For those of you searching for an easy way to spark joy above your hairline, hair accessories are calling. Here are some unique, women-owned hair accessory brands to elevate your style and help showcase your individuality.

Soieli

Founded by yours truly, Soieli specializes in hand-painted silk hair slips that are not your average scrunchie. The brand’s name, Soieli, comes from “a swirl of two French words soie, meaning silk, and soleil, meaning sun,” reflecting Soieli’s mission to use hand-painted silk to bring light into people’s lives. Soieli aims to help busy women easily elevate their look through beautiful hair accessories for everyday elegance. Each piece is crafted and hand-painted in their NYC studio as a wearable art piece, guaranteeing you a unique hair accessory that is literally made for you. Designed to promote hair health and prevent breakage, Soieli’s pieces are made from 100% silk and perfectly complement other products to care for curly hair. We love the signature Gold Water design, a blend of impressionist art and street art for a feminine meets urban look, which adds a beautiful gold iridescence to one’s locks. Pieces come in two sizes based on one’s hair thickness (yay hair inclusivity!) and are priced at $28 per piece.

Valet Studio

Aussie-based brand Valet Studio specializes in vintage-inspired resin hair clips and jewelry. Created by PR maven Ana Piteira, Valet’s “whimsical collection of clips (not to mention equally dreamy bracelets and earrings) has elevated what some might see as a schoolgirl staple and transformed it into a modern-day essential.” Since the resin is hand-poured, no two pieces are completely alike, guaranteeing you another unique accessory to add to your collection.

These sculptural accessories have become something of a cult favorite on Instagram and were seen on various influencers and celebrities at winter fashion shows. If you want to hop on board the barrette stacking trend, Valet has the pieces for you to reach your maximalist dreams. Pieces can be purchased on their eponymous website or on a variety of retailers, including Net-A-Porter and Free People. Our favorite is the Ursula Shell Clips in Pink, a chic reinvention of our old favorite butterfly clips from the ‘90s, priced at $45.

Jennifer Behr

Jennifer Behr’s namesake collection draws inspiration from the ceremonial history of headpieces in royalty, from which Behr hopes to emulate the “talismanic power of a good headpiece” in her products. Coming from a sculpture and art history background, Behr and her team create each “heirloom-quality piece” artfully by hand in their Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio. With accessories ranging from barrettes to turbans and everything in between, Behr has curated an extensive collection of luxury pieces. For an ethereal look, we love their Bianca Bandeaux headband. The Bianca Bandeaux has a row of delicately strung pearls threaded through an almost-invisible metal wire for a subtle effect of pearls floating in one’s tresses. While these pieces may not be suited for everyday wear, they certainly add an extra layer of glamour for those special occasions.

Lelet NY

Founded by accessory designer and artist, Sara Bieler Sasson, LELET NY creates modern, luxury hair accessories with designs inspired from both architectures as well as the runway. LELET NY juxtaposes nostalgia with modernity to capture the dichotomy of the modern woman, who is equal parts “feminine and fierce.” If you want some inspiration on where to wear these fierce-feminine pieces, you can peruse LELET NY’s large hair accessory collection by occasions: bridal, daytime wear, and evening wear. We love their Blush Crystal Bobbi Set, a set of three unique pearl and crystal pins that perfectly complement one another.

Sophie Buhai

LA-based jewelry designer, Sophie Buhai, known for her namesake jewelry collection, has recently expanded into hair accessories. Her collection focuses on sculptural silhouettes while using solid sterling silver materials to create a “series of modern classics that transcend seasons and trends.” She aims to curate a selection of art objects that are accessible to all. Buhai’s recent Hair Collection adds extra drama to classic hair pieces like bows, headbands, and scrunchies. The bows are emphatically large, the organza scrunchie engulfs the bun that it holds and the silk headband twists to perfection. These are definitely statement pieces. Our favorite is the Organza Oversized Scrunchie, evoking the silhouette of a large ballerina skirt.
